How To Keep Your Skin Hydrated: Black Oat Extract vs. Hyaluronic Acid

How To Keep Your Skin Hydrated: Black Oat Extract vs. Hyaluronic Acid

When it comes to your skin health, one of the most important things to do is keeping it hydrated. If you have sensitive skin or a compromised skin barrier, you could also be experiencing water loss, which in turn continues to aggravate your skin, and so the cycle continues.

So how do you keep your skin hydrated and plump?

Let's first take a look at the levels of the skin (epidermis and dermis) and what they do.

There are 3 levels of water regulation in the skin:

At the top, we have the water barrier - the lipid matrix impermeable to water prevents evaporation of water from the surface of the skin.

The second level is water storage where the epidermis stores water via the hygroscopic substances in the NMF (natural moisturizing factor).

The third level of the epidermis is supplied with water from the dermis through transport diffusion.

By introducing hydrating products into your routine, your skin will be reinforced thereby breaking the cycle of water loss and inflammation. We decided to introduce our All-Calm Face Mist to do just that, help with hydration while helping calm your skin.

When it comes to ingredients that are hydrating, we are most familiar with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid (a naturally occurring sugar molecule found in your skin that helps bind water to collagen). However, we came across a blend of ingredients that provided even more hydration than hyaluronic acid, which is Black Oat Extract & Lecithin.

Based on scientifically confirmed effects, the combination of the two ingredients are deeply effective and provides a long-lasting improvement in skin hydration. It also provides much better hydration effect than glycerin or hyaluronic acid combined.

Black Oat Extract is an ancient cereal with natural water reservoirs such as polysaccharides and amino acids. It helps to reinforce your skin's own NMF as it has water-retaining substances such as proteins, amino acids, and polysaccharides. Black oat extract also has valuable vitamins such as provitamin A, B1, B2, B6, pantothenic acid, and niacin. All of these elements help support your skin by storing water in the epidermis, helping with keeping your skin hydrated and plump.

Lecithin is a valuable component of soybean. It helps to stabilize the lamellar lipid matrix and protects skin against evaporation. We use a GMO-free, plant-based lecithin from soybean and it provides phospholipids from fatty acids, glycerin, phosphoric acids and choline. Lecithin helps supports the skin‘s own lamellar lipid matrix and protects against evaporation.

These two ingredients blended together increases skin moisture levels with visible improvements in dry skin after 7 days of use. Combine that with ingredients like niacinamide (which is known as an anti-inflammatory that visibly improves the appearance of enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, fine lines, wrinkles, and brightens skin tone), you have yourself a super-hydrating product that gives you incredible results.

We love incorporating our All-Calm Face Mist into our routine, morning and night, as the first step to intensively hydrating our skin. It is our serum and essence all in one!
