An Interview With Dr. Tanvi Tijoriwala

After exploring how gut health is connected to our skin's health with Dr. Tanvi, we are sitting down with her to find out more about her journey into Naturopathic medicine and her practice. Don't forget to take a look at our Guide to Glowing Skin, Part 1 and Part 2

  • Tell us about your journey to becoming a Naturopathic doctor
  • It’s one of those “you don't choose your destiny, your destiny chooses you” stories. I have always wanted to be a dentist for as long as I can remember. One day after shadowing a dentist as part of my extracurricular activities, I realized that this profession was not for me. I wanted something that was more challenging and something that allowed me to interact with my patients/listen to their stories (kind of hard to do as a dentist when you are working on their teeth).

My parents used to see a naturopath at that time - something I had no interest in because I thought they gave you fancy diets to follow (absolutely untrue). I went with them to their appointment once and stayed back to shadow the naturopathic doctor for the rest of the day. I saw him be a health detective, use different modalities and more importantly make a profound positive impact on his patient’s life. Before I left his clinic, I knew I had found my career.

  • What do you enjoy most about your role?
  • I enjoy that moment when a patient leaves the appointment feeling more confident about their health, more motivated and more supported. It is truly gratifying.

  • What areas do you focus on most?
  • Medically, my main focus is treating skin conditions. I help people feel safer and more confident in their skin. There is a huge stigma around skin conditions and a huge mental health aspect to it. I focus on supporting my patients both physically and mentally.

  • In your expert opinion, what is the most important aspect of maintaining good health?
  • There are two - one is how you nourish your body aka the food we eat. And the second is how we nourish our mind aka having a positive mindset and removing anything/anyone that is toxic.

  • We are all for living in the moment and practicing mindfulness, but if you could envision your practice in 5 to 10 years, what would it look like?
  • That is a great question. I am not much of a planner, I think we miss many opportunities in life because we are so focused on the ONE goal we want to achieve. However, I do know that I want to be able to make an impact on as many lives as possible. My entire practice is based on serving those who suffer from skin conditions. So I envision myself doing just that in the next 5-10 years. Whether that is through my practice or through other avenues, I am not sure, but that is definitely what I will be doing.
